Forgive and bless your adversaries

24 May

During my legal trials that culminated in jail time, those who were once family and friends turned into adversaries.
How do we respond to adversaries?
Do not be angry at adversaries, or fret over them. But love them and pray for them.
“But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” Jesus said in Matthew 5:44-45
This approach shifts your focus from adversaries to the Lord, the One who can provide relief. Then you can grow in your relationship with Him, a blessing that can result from any trial.
Once you see Him move in your life and the lives and circumstances of those involved, your faith will be strengthened. This strength will empower you to comfort others in their difficulties.
Psalm 37 is a blueprint for responding to adversaries or enemies:
The words “do not fret” appear three times in the first eight verses.
Instead, believers are encouraged to:
Trust in the LORD and do good.
Delight yourself in the LORD.
Commit your way to the LORD.
Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for Him.
Wait for the LORD and keep his way.
The last two verses of the Psalm summarize:
“The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD; he is their stronghold in time of trouble. The LORD helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him.” Psalm 37:39-40
