Rejoice in the Lord always!

11 Jul

When I was released from jail, I didn’t hesitate after being told by the kind lady processing my papers that I could leave.
But I walked swiftly down a hall with the belongings I came with, opened a non-descript door, and stepped down a one-step cement stair on to the grass and into nothing but the dark of night.
My cell phone was still working. I called my brother and told him I was out while I walked north along city streets toward a parking deck about six blocks away.
He was struck by how long it took the judicial system to release me after the judge lowered the amount needed for my release from $10,000 to $1,000, but I didn’t care. I was giddy.
Now if only if I had such excitement over my freedom from the condemnation of sin and hell… and I should, but even more so! I should be rejoicing daily!
Christ in Luke 10:20 told 70 followers who He sent out “Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”
Rejoice in knowing that you are bound for eternity with God, Christ told His followers as they were filled with joy over casting out demons.
The freedom that matters infinitely more than here and now comes from a heart redeemed by God, not from a location such as out of jail. True freedom leads to eternal life, forever freedom from sin.
Christ said to the Jews who believed in Him that “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth. And the truth shall make you free.” John 8:31
I was overjoyed with my newfound civil freedom. I was physically free, but would I abide in Him and be truly free?
Would I heed Paul’s words and “…work out your own salvation with fear and trembling;” Phil. 2:12b
In Philippians 4, Paul writes about fellow workers in the gospel, and says their names “are in the Book of Life.”
In the next verse, verse 4, Paul writes, “Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!”
As believers, no matter what, we can always rejoice that our names are written in heaven, in the Book of Life.
