The Lord is faithful

The farther removed I am from my stay in jail in late 2017, including the long nights, the easier it is for me to forget how strongly I felt the love and assurance of God.
In a way, I am thankful the events happened late in life, at age 55. Maybe I can make it to the end of my days and still remember how merciful the Lord was to a sinner like me.
Sometimes I take myself back in time when I laid on the top left steel slab in the cell.
I was staring at the ceiling of the jail, surrounded by alleged criminals, with no set date for a release. All my jobs were in jeopardy, the likelihood of job losses escalating as each day passed. And in five weeks, regardless of my freedom, there would be no job waiting for me.
The chances of keeping my house and car, having the ability to pay any support, and live in Montgomery, Alabama near my three daughters were all fading.
Those who put me in jail showed no signs of letting up in their pursuit.
It was a ‘back against the Red Sea’ and ‘Daniel tossed in the lions’ den’ moment. I don’t think that is an over-dramatization of the situation. No, there were no man-eating lions in the jail.
But the only future I knew I could absolutely count on involved returning to live in my dying hometown of Camp Hill and working fast-food in nearby Dadeville.
But God intervened.
“If the LORD had not been on our side – let Israel say – if the LORD had not been on our side when men attacked us, when their anger flared against us, they would have swallowed us alive; the flood would have engulfed us, the torrent would have swept over us, the raging waters would have swept us away. Praise be to the LORD, who has not let us be torn by their teeth. We have escaped like a bird out of the fowler’s snare; the snare has been broken, and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.” Psalm 124
And He blessed me, not only by freeing me but also by providing a better future than I could have ever planned.
“Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God, the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea and everything in them, the LORD who remains faithful forever.” Psalm 146:5-6 (1)
He is faithful.
